RSL learns first Open Cup draw

May 22nd, 2015 | by Sean Walker

Two more U.S. Open Cup matches are coming to Rio Tinto Stadium.

After its win at Long Island in the second round, Real Monarchs’ third-round matchup in the Open Cup was confirmed by U.S. Soccer to be against USL Rocky Mountain rival Colorado Springs on May 27 at 7 p.m. in Sandy, Utah.

The match will be the fourth overall for the Monarchs against the Switchbacks, going back to the final game of both teams’ inaugural preseason campaigns. The winner of that match will then travel to Dick Sporting Goods Park for a June 16 matchup with the Colorado Rapids.

Like the Rapids, Real Salt Lake will join the rest of Major League Soccer in the fourth round of the national tournament. RSL will take on the winner of the “Cascadia 2 Derby” between Portland Timbers 2 and Seattle Sounders 2 at Rio Tinto Stadium on June 17 at 8 p.m. MT.

MLS teams entering in Round 4 were paired up primarily against NASL-USL matchup winners for the next portion of the Open Cup — except one highly anticipated game. The lone MLS-vs-MLS match of the fourth round will see historic rivals Seattle and Portland play an early-round Cascadia Derby on June 16 at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash.
