After bowing out of the U.S. Open Cup in the third round, Real Monarchs return to USL play for its third match in the Capital City Cup against Sacramento Republic FC on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. MT at Bonney Field in Sacramento.

The Monarchs (1-6-3) put their unbeaten (1-0) record against Republic FC (6-5-0) on the line after earning the first win in franchise history, 1-0 at home against the Sacramento side. The Republic are led by former MLS coach Preki and Salt Lake City native Justin Braun, as well as a host of attacking talent like Rodrigo Lopez.

Max Rauhofer‘s goal in the 78th minute gave the Monarchs its first-ever win the last time these two teams met. Rauhofer redirected Fito Ovalle‘s shot off his heel and past goalkeeper Patrick McLain when the two sides faced off at Rio Tinto Stadium last month.

Saturday’s match will be the third in the Capital City Cup rivalry series between the Monarchs (Salt Lake City), Sacramento, Austin, Oklahoma City, and Arizona United (Phoenix). Real Monarchs are currently in third place in the challenge, just behind OKC Energy FC.
