Monarchs GameDay: Monarchs to host SLC native Braun, Sacramento Republic FC

April 29th, 2015 | by Sean Walker

Officially, the Real Monarchs will be the home team during its match against Sacramento Republic FC on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Rio Tinto Stadium.

But the Monarchs won’t be the only Utahn on the pitch that night.

Sacramento captain Justin Braun, the former Salt Lake Community  College standout and SLC native, will lead the defending USL champions into Sandy, looking for a win in a match that will be broadcast via tape delay on KMYU, and livestreamed here on SaltCityFC.com

The two teams will meet for the first official time this evening, but the Western Conference-leading Republic FC (4-3-0) played at Rio Tinto Stadium last September for a midseason friendly that featured mostly Real Salt Lake reserve players, including Monarchs loanee Lalo Fernandez in goal and defender Justen Glad. RSL won that match 2-0, with both goals coming from Robbie Findley and Sebastian Velasquez, both players who have moved on from SLC since then.

Along with Braun, the Monarchs (0-4-2) could feature local players in forward Garrett Losee, midfielder Maikon Orellana, midfielder Fito Ovalle, forward Sebastian Saucedo, and defender Phanuel Kavita. Guyanese international Emery Welshman is also expected to make his USL debut Wednesday after missing the Monarchs’ first six games of the season — two to international duty, and the remaining four with a knee injury suffered in the Golden Jaguars’ 2-0 win over Grenada.
