Monarchs’ Fernandez, McGovern earn USL weekly honor

Real Monarchs SLC has played one official game in USL play, a stingy 0-0 draw at L.A. Galaxy II on Sunday night in Carson, California.

The franchise now has more individual weekly honors than games played.

Real Salt Lake on-loan goalkeeper Lalo Fernandez and Monarchs defender Riley McGovern were named to the league’s 11-player team of the week, USL announced Tuesday. Seattle Sounders 2 midfielder Pablo Rossi was named player of the week after his one-goal, one-assist performance in a 4-2 win over defending USL champion Sacramento Republic FC.

Fernandez, who is the third-string goalkeeper with Real Salt Lake behind U.S. international Nick Rimando and backup Jeff Attinella, made four saves against the Galaxy II side to preserve the shutout — marking the first point earned in USL play for the Monarchs.

McGovern was one of four defenders named to the team of the week, joining the Galaxy’s A.J. DeLaGarza and Charleston’s Quinton Griffith and Taylor Mueller. The duo in the back led the Battery to a 3-2 win over Toronto FC II.

McGovern’s debut at left back was solid, if not mixed. The 23-year-old defender from the University of New Mexico was able to spring forward from the fullback spot and also track back at times — those that ability was tested with a yellow card and a few fouls.

The Monarchs’ Sebastian Saucedo also received votes for USL’s team of the week, which is compiled by a panel of independent media from every USL market.

Below is the complete roster of the first USL Team of the Week of 2014:
