LIVE STREAM: Real Monarchs hungry for a result at rival Colorado Springs

June 13th, 2015 | by Sean Walker

Real Monarchs are coming off a 10-day break since their last match, and the USL affiliate of Real Salt Lake is hungry for a result — especially in a place like Colorado Springs, where the Monarchs are 0-1 all-time in regular-season play.

But Saturday’s match at 7 p.m. MT against the Rocky Mountain rivals represents a chance for a new birth for Real Monarchs. The club has a little breathing room after a hectic six games in 19 days, and the players admitted to having their batteries recharged during the previous week of training and a friendly against the RSL-Arizona Academy U-18 squad.

Still, the time to make a push for the Monarchs (1-6-5, No. 12 Western Conference) is now. Head coach Freddy Juarez’s side is in the middle of a long season — made longer by the thrown-together nature of much of the early weeks of its season — but it still stands eight points out of a spot in the USL playoffs.

And yet, not all is doom and gloom for the first-year franchise. After team captain Lucas Baldin scored the equalizer mid-way through stoppage time to preserve a 2-2 draw against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 in the Monarchs’ only home match in June, the Salt Lake club has picked up a result in three of is last four games, including a 1-1 tie against defending champion Sacramento.

The streak is something to build on as Real Monarchs make the journey to take on the Switchbacks on Saturday night. This meeting is the fifth overall meeting in five months against Colorado Springs, and the familiar foes still have one more match in August to contest. The Monarchs’ only win came during the 2015 preseason, when Coco Navarro’s goal was the lone score of the match a week before kicking off the regular season.

After Saturday, the Monarchs will travel to Seattle Sounders 2 on June 25, and make a trip to the desert to face Arizona United SC on June 27.
